Firebird - Finale
The piece begins slowly with low-pitched instruments. Flutes then take over. The music is repetitive for the first few bars, then begins to crescendo dramatically. The music is very legato, and eventually starts to be tongued normally at the end of the crescendo. The piece rapidly accelerates suddenly into a happy and exciting moment. It then slows greatly and decrescendos for drama before strong and long note at the end.
Firebird - Infernal Dance of Kashcheys
Kashcheys is clearly an evil character. The entire piece has a sinister feel. The piece is loud and notes are attacked heavily. The music is fast paced and full of huge crescendos and decrescendos. The instrumentation sometimes alternates between high-pitched, lighter (flutes, clarinets, bells) and trumpets and bass instruments bass instruments (tubas, trombones) , sometimes in a call and response style. In the end, the music fades, representing Kashcheys growing tired and ending the dance.
Firebird - Princess Khorovod
The piece begins with flutes and clarinets, representing the entrance of the princess. She is clearly beautiful and Ivan probably falls in love at first sight. The dynamics stay relatively level, but there are brief crescendos and decrescendos. The articulation is smooth and legato, to represent the grace of the princess.
Petroushka - The Crowds
The piece begins with bells and flutes doing many things, representing busy crowds. The piece quickly crescendos and adds trumpets and other instruments to represent happiness and excitement. The piece decrescendos briefly and bass instruments come in, foreshadowing something bad. The rhythm accelerates quickly and the flutes sound frantic as the bass instruments grow louder. The piece ends with a short decrescendo followed by a crescendo and trumpet playing over flutes and bass instruments.
Petroushka - The Shrovetide Fair
The piece begins in a regular ballet style. It had a fast pace and light style. It seemed to be portraying a lighthearted mood, probably with dancing or a fair or other event. This is because the piece begins, and uses throughout, high-pitched instruments playing peacefully. These instruments are flutes, clarinets, chimes and bells. There are sudden crescendos and add-ins of louder and deeper instruments and fast-paced frantic flute playing, probably representing something bad or evil. The piece slowly builds into a more frightening sound (faster, larger, louder) with these instruments as the piece goes on, ending with many different parts portraying something bad.
